Having to evacuate your home isn’t something that you probably want to think about. However, even though the need to do so might never come along, it’s important that you at least plan for it. The following are a few tips to keep in mind in the event that you need to evacuate:
Emergency kit – Put together a kit that includes all medication, a first aid kit, a flashlight, a portable radio, extra batteries, plenty of water, three days’ worth of non-perishable food, hygiene items, cash, credit cards and blankets.
- Find a place for pets – Find a place outside of your area where you can drop off your pets. Put together a box with a week’s worth of pet food, medication, leashes, toys and treats.
- Plan a route – Before leaving your house, plan your emergency route. Leave early to avoid getting caught in traffic and pay attention to any alerts about the area.
- Leaving your house – Turn off all utilities and put up storm shutters or plywood on your windows. Lock the house up.
