When celebrating the holidays with loved ones, the thoughts of potential dangers to your home are far from your mind, but the holidays do bring with them some extra risks.  At Parker Young Construction, we would like to remind you of home safety tips for the holidays to keep everyone safe and happy.

Holiday home fires can be caused by common elements such as:

  • Kitchen Fires – With the increase in activity and added pressure of more cooking, safety is often forgotten in the kitchen. Don’t get distracted when cooking and keep a fire extinguisher for grease fires nearby.
  • Space Heaters – Make sure you follow safety instructions in the operation of your space heater, and keep decorations away from it.
  • Candles – The warm glow of a candle is a welcome sight, but remember to blow them out and to keep them away from decorations or places where children and pets could accidentally knock into them.
  • Stockings – Stockings may be hung by the chimney with care, but move them somewhere else when you have the fireplace lit.  The heat from the flames might catch the stockings on fire.
  • Lights – Too many lights, strands in poor condition, overloaded outlets and more situations can easily cause a fire.  Use common sense when lighting your home.
  • Christmas Trees – The tree is a great part of the celebration and decoration, but trees can quickly spark to life if too dry or placed near a heat source.
