Water damage after flooding, a broken pipe, or even a large spill can be a major problem in any home. However, if your floors have carpet, you’re even more likely to experience problems because of the potential for build up of mold and unhealthy bacteria. While getting rid of mold that’s formed requires professional intervention, there are some things you can do to prevent it from forming after exposure to water.
Remove the water as fast as possible using a wet/dry vacuum. If you don’t have one, they can be rented from most hardware stores.
- Speed up the drying process by putting fans in the area. If the weather is warm outside, opening the windows and doors and avoiding use of your air conditioning unit can be helpful as well.
- Use a dehumidifier in the area where the water damage occurred. If possible, lowering the humidity in your home is also ideal using your thermostat.
- Have your carpet professionally cleaned once all traces of water have disappeared. Let the company doing the cleaning know about your recent exposure to water.
