The most recent reports from FEMA and the U.S Fire Administration provide some startling facts and some unwelcome truths about residential house fires in the United States. For 2008-2010, the latest period covered, there was an average of over 50,000 house fires each year. The unfortunate result was the deaths of 150 people, severe injuries to another 575, and $326 million in property damage and loss.

The two main causes of residential fires are easy to predict: cooking fires and faulty heating systems. Thirty percent of fires created by heating systems were caused by combustibles stored too close to the heat source.  Some simple home safety practices such as proper attention while cooking and appropriate maintenance on a home’s heating system can eliminate most residential fires.
