Keeping track of all of your belongings can be difficult, but it’s vital if you ever need to collect on insurance if anything should happen, whether your home is damaged by a storm or any of your possessions are stolen. Take advantage of the time you put into spring cleaning this year to take inventory of your belongings as well.

The easiest way to take inventory is by using a spreadsheet. You may want to check with your insurance agency to see if they have any guidelines for taking inventory. Once you do this, begin documenting all of your possessions. You should divide your spreadsheet into the rooms of your home, using different columns for item descriptions, quantity, cost, year purchased and model/serial numbers. Once you have everything listed, take digital photographs as evidence. Use overview shots of each room and close ups shots for more expensive items. Once you have both an inventory and photographs of all of your belongings, make sure that you back up the data.
