Safe Deposit Boxes: Why You Need One And What To Put In It

Topics:

Have you considered what would happen to important documents in your home if fire, flood or any other natural disasters were to destroy it?  There are certain documents that we need to protect from these elements, and in many cases it is a wise idea to protect them in a separate location from your home. One of the most efficient ways to keep certain items safe from disaster is to rent a safe deposit box.

These boxes can keep your valuable documents guarded securely for a nominal fee. They also give you the peace of mind knowing these important parts of our lives they are safely tucked away for when we need them.

What to keep in a safe deposit box:

  • Copies of your birth certificate
  • Copy of your marriage certificate
  • Copy of your passport
  • Copy of separation/divorce papers
  • Copies of any professional licenses, degrees etc.
  • A copy of your social security card
  • A record of all the valuable items in your home
  • Any receipts for valuables you have purchased
  • Family heirlooms
  • The deeds to any property you own
  • Copies of Wills and Powers of attorney, you will want to keep the originals with a legal expert.

While a safe deposit box is a great idea for keeping many sensitive or valuable items protected, it’s not the right answer for everything. Cash, original birth certificates, wills, social security cards, passports, and Power of Attorney documents should be kept in a fireproof safe at home due to the potential immediacy of their use.
