Reading Your Ceiling Stains To Determine Cause

If you spot a stain on your ceiling, then it’s most likely the result of water damage. However, knowing what caused that water damage is an important step in having the problem fixed. The following are a few tips for determining the source of your ceiling stains:

Exhaust Fans – If the stain is occurring near an exhaust fan, it’s usually because the fan is connected to an un-insulated duct. This means that the moisture that the fan is supposed to exhaust outside will cause condensation, in turn causing the stain.

  • Wall and Ceiling Corners – Stains that appear in the corners where the walls and ceiling meet are often caused by ice dam leaks. This is even more likely if your attic insulation is insufficient. By sealing your attic air leaks and adding better insulation to the attic, you can avoid these stains.
  • Ceiling Stains – If you have ceiling stains but your roof isn’t leaking, then it may be that because your attic has condensation problems. You’ll want to reduce humidity levels indoor and seal any air leaks.
