Being wary is the first step in preventing damage to your home from fire. In addition to having the usual smoke detectors and fire alarms plus a fire extinguisher, there are several common sense rules that every homeowner should follow when dealing with fire. Here are the most important:

  • Don’t Leave a Fire Unattended – While an apparently obvious, many fires are started by candles or open flames left unattended while a homeowner makes a quick trip to the store. Even an electric oven or cook-top should not be left on when you leave the house.
  • Keep the Proper Clearances – Grills and barbecue pits should be sited well away from the house and any overhanging tree limbs. In addition, take account of dry conditions if cooking outdoors.
  • Don’t Overload Electrical Outlets – Still the largest source of fires in the U.S., overloaded electrical circuits are the easiest thing to fix. All new homes are required to have an outlet every six feet. Simply spread out your usage.
