After winter snows comes spring showers and potential for water damage to your family’s dwelling. Next comes warm summer weekends when you have the perfect opportunity to do some maintenance to prevent damage to your home in the coming year.
There are five important areas where waterproofing can be of great benefit:
Rain Gutters:
- Pull leaves out of clogged downspouts using barbecue tongs
- Flush clogs out using a water hose
- Use extra-long lag screws to replace gutter nails
Concrete
- Repair small cracks using concrete caulk
- Repair larger cracks with concrete patch
Windows/Doors
- Mark where sticking, remove, remove excess material, rehang
- Seal with coat of paint to prevent sticking
Water Damage
- Use oil-based primer-sealer before painting over water damage/stains–choose sealer with high amounts of pigments/other elements to cover the stain
- Disposable rollers/brushes will be easier to use–oil-based products require a lot of paint thinner to clean up
Rust
- Use paint with additives to stick to and neutralize rust
- Use heavy grease for latches and gate hinges
