Make Sure Your Insurance Covers Winter Damages

The main causes of damage during the winter are snow and ice. When ice melts, it can cause water damage, while the weight of snow can cause damage to the structure of your roof. For the most part, basic homeowner’s insurance policies cover damage caused directly by winter weather events, such as a roof collapsing or a tree falling due to the weight of snow. There are some exceptions to these events. If your roof was already in a state of disrepair or the trees weren’t properly maintained, then you may not be covered since you did not take the necessary steps to try and prevent these damages from occurring. One thing that is definitely not covered is flooding. Flooding due to melted ice is not covered unless you purchase additional flood insurance.
