One of the most important factors of keeping your home safe is knowing the layout of your house. For example, you’ll want to know where your gas valve is located and how to turn it off in case of an emergency.
Gas leaks can occur due to a number of reasons, whether they were caused by an earthquake or a construction accident. You can tell if there is a gas leak by either smelling gas in your home, spotting damage to the gas line or hearing the sound of gas escaping. Contact your gas company immediately if you think there is a gas leak.
Most gas meters are installed in the front or side of the home. You’ll want to turn your gas off immediately if you think there is a gas leak. When facing the gas meter, you’ll notice a pipe that runs to the ground. This is your main gas line. The valve will run parallel to the pipe when the gas is on. Turn it perpendicular to the pipe using a crescent wrench to turn it off.
