Thunderstorms can cause flooding and damaging hail and winds, but these are not the only forces that can cause harm. Lightning strikes are always a potential hazard during storms. Lightning safety week is June 23-29 and this is the perfect time to remember the following home safety tips.
Move Indoors
At the first sign of a storm, go inside. Outdoors, you are a target for a direct lightning hit.
Avoid Using Electrical Items
If your home is hit, the electricity can travel through the wires and strike you if you are touching any wired items. Items include corded phones, computers, corded radios and electrical appliances.
Avoid Doors and Windows
Do not stand close to doors and windows. The safest place indoors is an inner room away from plumbing and electrical items.
Do not use or Touch Plumbing Fixtures
Water and plumbing pipes are very conductive. When a house is hit, the electricity may course through the plumbing. If you are touching plumbing or water when this happens, the electricity will enter your body.
After the storm is over, it may be tempting to go outdoors. Wait for at least half an hour after the last thunderclap before doing this.
