The smoke detector myth: Whereas pressing the button on your smoke detector will show if the sound is working, what it will not tell you is whether it is sensing smoke correctly. Instead, conduct the test by holding a blown-out match beneath the detector.

  • The “siding is watertight” myth: Wood and stucco siding expand and contract according to the temperature, sometimes causing cracks. Avoid rainwater entering your home with sufficient caulking.
  • The damp basements myth: Dampness in the basement is usually due to exterior drainage rather than water entering from the foundation.
  • The insulation myth: Too much insulation can lead to mold and mildew. Before making any significant changes to your insulation, seek the advice of an expert.
  • The bathroom ventilation myth: Even if you have a window open in the bathroom, you will need to ventilate with an exhaust fan.
