The nights are growing longer and cooler, and Fall is in full swing. Before you settle down with a mug of cider, it’s time to prepare your house for cold weather. Preparing for the fall and winter months will help you save money and prevent damage to your home.

You should check your home’s fire safety devices regularly, and fall is an especially good time to do so. Test your smoke detectors and get a new fire extinguisher if your current extinguisher is near its expiration date.

Check your home for signs of deterioration. Touch up peeling or blistering paint, repair cracks and holes, and replace damaged shingles. Attending to relatively small problems can help prevent damage to your home over the winter. Clean the exterior of your home, especially gutters and downspouts.

Make sure your heating system is in peak condition. Have ductwork cleaned and make sure that your furnace filter is clean. Complete any tasks that require ventilation, such as any painting, stains or work involving chemical solvents. A weekend should be enough to prepare your home for the coming months.
