The terrible cold weather that recently blanketed the southeast caused problems for many homeowners. But now that we have finally begun to thaw out, it’s important to prevent damage to your home by implementing some of these timely safety measures.
- Create a fully stocked disaster kit before the next big snowfall or cold snap. Don’t forget to include pet essentials and things to keep the kids occupied that don’t require the internet or electricity.
- Make sure there are working smoke detectors on each level of your home and near all bedrooms. Also install electrical carbon monoxide detectors complete with battery backup if you have fuel-burning appliances and/or a working fireplace.
- Keep a list of all emergency telephone numbers posted next to your home’s land line. Also add these numbers to your mobile phone’s list of contacts.
- Animals love the taste of antifreeze, so take care when filling automobile radiators and store the container safely in a closed cabinet or closet.
- Check to make sure your home’s hot water heater is set to 120 degrees or lower. On cold skin, it may be hard to judge how hot the water really is.
