It may not be easy to explain fire safety to young children, however, it  is one of the most important life lessons you will teach them. Most parents don’t realize that one of the leading causes of house fires in the United States is due to children under the age of ten playing with lighters or matches. This is why it is so important to educate your children about fire from an early age; encourage children never to play with lighters and matches.

Here are some additional ways to integrate fire safety into your home:

  • Teach your child to associate fire with “hot” and “ouch” as one of their earliest comprehensions.
  • As your child grows, continue practicing fire safety in your home by including your child in the process of checking the smoke and carbon monoxide alarms monthly.
  • Have your child draw your escape route map. Knowing how to escape during house fires and having a meeting place your family is familiar with is important.
