Chill Out: How To Stay Cool This Summer Without Using The AC

Topics:

If you’re anywhere around Macon, Georgia, you know that summer can really turn on the heat. Unfortunately, that’s often reflected in your electric bill. To keep your cool without cranking up your HVAC system, try a few of the tips below.

How to Stay Cool This Summer Without Using the AC

Passive Systems

Some of these ideas won’t take any time at all, others can take several years. Adding shade to your home’s exterior helps keep it cool, so add some tall shade trees to the south and west side of your property. Putting awnings or other shade over your windows to block the sun will also help. Adding insulated curtains will help keep your home’s interior cool, as will adding insulation to your home. Why? Insulation adds a buffer between the exterior and interior temperatures of your home.

Active Systems

Use a box fan in your windows after dark to draw in the cool night air, then close the windows up again in the morning. A whole-house fan can also help ventilate your home and draw in cool air at night. If you have a basement, putting a box fan in the doorway and closing off any upstairs rooms can help move the cool basement air into the rest of your home, even during the day. Adding a damp cloth to the front of a box fan cools by evaporation.

By trying even a few of these tips, you’re sure to enjoy a cooler summer and a lower utility bill this year. If you need remodeling to achieve these goals or disaster repair services in Atlanta, please contact Parker Young Construction with any questions or to get a quote on your project.
