Better Understand House Fires

A home can become engulfed in flames within an instant. More deaths can be attributed to fires than natural disasters in the US. Property damage can also be extensive, leaving in its wake the need for costly home disaster repair.

Many of today’s high tech materials and goods are highly flammable. Synthetic furnishings and recycled materials are responsible for a faster spread of fires today than what was experienced in the past from more natural substances and building materials.

Almost half of all house fires start in the kitchen. Generally, the fire begins on the stovetop while someone is cooking. If a recipe containing oil boils over the rim of the pan and comes in contact with the gas flame or electric burner, the oil can instantly ignite.

The flames can easily spread to other flammable items close by. As the flames expand, they get hotter, igniting cabinets, curtains, walls, and working up to the ceiling. Smoke builds, including dangerous gases that are released from burning man-made objects. At best, you only have two to three minutes to get out of the house safely, because the whole house can be inflamed within four minutes.
