Flooding can seriously damage a number of things, from the structure of your home to your possessions kept in it. However, it can also cause problems once the water has been cleared. The following are a few things you need to do with the electricity of homes with flood damage:
- All cover plates need to be removed in order to check the wiring and terminal connections.
- Switches and outlets, as well as their boxes, need to be cleaned of mud and dirt since this can cause shorts or overheating.
- The main box should be checked if it has gotten wet; if so, it needs to be cleaned.
- Switches and outlets may need to be replaced if they have been exposed to a lot of dirt, mud or even salt water corrosion. Be sure to look for any broken electrical fixtures or exposed wiring.
- Inspect the wires that go into each switch and outlet and be sure to replace those that are covered with fabric. Aluminum wiring that has been exposed to salt water should be replaced as well.
