Nothing is worse than going to the basement and smelling then seeing disgusting black mold! Stop this annoying and potentially harmful problem with these helpful tips.
- Begin by thoroughly cleaning the entire space, focusing on things that can retain moisture like cardboard storage boxes and stacks of old magazines, newspapers and books. Anything you wish to keep, clean, then store in tightly-sealed plastic containers.
- Clean all surfaces with a product specifically designed to kill the damp dirt mold thrives on. After drying, spray again with a mixture of vinegar and water to kill any remaining mold. Reapply on a regular basis to reduce the chances of regrowth.
- Prime all remaining interior foundation walls and slabs. Then apply a semi-gloss paint or epoxy to help seal out any moisture or condensation.
- Repair basement foundation cracks and plumbing leaks as soon as possible.
- Finally, regularly check moist areas where mold can grow unnoticed; such as inside storage cabinets, around appliances that use or produce water such as washers, freezers, air conditioning evaporator coils and around plumbing pipes.
