In Georgia, storms cause a lot of damage to houses. When a storm damages or destroys your house, you should know how to protect yourself from scam artists.
In areas that have received extensive storm damage, con artists will often go door to door, trying to sign people up with their company to repair the damage on their house. A reputable company will not engage in these sort of practices. Verify that a contractor is established in your area before doing business with them. You can do this by checking their references. If you live in a state that requires contractors to be bonded and or licensed in order to perform duties as a general contractor.
You should always get multiple estimates. Some insurance companies might require that you have several estimates. Regardless, it is always a good idea to check with several contractors before proceeding with hiring a contractor to work on your home.
Avoid telling the bidding contractors how much your insurance will cover. Some contractors might try to add on costs to get close to that insurance payment.
