While you cannot stop a hurricane from coming, you can prepare for it and keep your family and your home as safe as possible. Here are important home safety tips for making it through hurricane season.
Keep Your Hurricane Supplies Stocked
Prepare emergency kits containing first aid supplies, extra batteries, a weather radio, flashlights, protein bars and other emergency food to last for three days and drinking water. If you have pets, remember that they will need food and water, too. Keep their carriers near your emergency kits so you can grab it all and leave quickly, if necessary.
Home Protection
Have plywood or storm shutters ready to use if a watch or warning is issued. Flooding is common during a hurricane, so have plenty of sandbags on hand as well.
Keep a full tank of gas in your vehicle. By remaining vigilant about this all season, you can avoid long lines at gas stations prior to an evacuation.
Plan Evacuation Routes
If you are asked to evacuate, heed the warning. You should have several routes planned. This way, if one is blocked, you can take an alternative route. Listen to your radio for traffic updates.
