Preparing for storms in your Atlanta home before they occur is the best way to ensure the safety and well-being of your family. When drawing up an emergency plan, don’t forget about your dog! The following are a few things you should do in order to plan for an emergency if you own a dog:
Have a dog disaster kit – Your dog disaster kit should have enough food to last a week stored in an airtight container. Don’t forget any medication your dog needs as well as a first aid kit in case it is injured.
- Look for boarding ahead of time – Research a few boarding facilities or motels that allow pets before bad weather is supposed to hit. Red Cross shelters don’t allow pets, which means you’ll want to find a safe place where you can bring your dog, if you have to leave your home.
- Put a microchip in its ID tag – Your dog could get separated during a weather emergency. Having a microchip in its ID tag will allow it to be found more easily.
