Reasons Your Home’s Roof Could Leak

Topics:

A roof that leaks water tends to be quite a worry, especially since a small leak can eventually lead to problems such as mold growth or water damage. To reduce the chances of roof leaks, it’s important to know what could cause them. The following are a few reasons why your roof could be leaking:

  • Georgia home water damage

Broken shingles – Broken shingles are easy to spot and can occur due to heavy rain or high winds.

  • Improperly sealed valleys – The valley is where the two planes of your roof meet. If they aren’t properly sealed, rainwater will leak into the home.
  • Cracked flashing – Flashing are thin metal pieces installed beneath the shingles and onto of the joints to create a barrier that is water-resistant. Flashing is often sealed using tar, which can corrode over time. If this happens, your flashing will be exposed and can crack due to exposure to the elements.
  • Ice dam buildup – This occurs when a ridge of ice forms on the roof’s edge, preventing water from draining off, causing it to leak into the house.

These are some of the reasons for a leaking roof. Contact us at Parker Young if you experience water damage.
