Owning a fire extinguisher is a great step to making your home more safe from fire. It’s important to get the right kinds of fire extinguisher for the rooms in which they’re stored; for example, it’s a good idea to get a fire extinguisher rated for grease fires in the kitchen and one for electrical fires for the rest of the house. However, just owning and storing a fire extinguisher is not enough; you also need to know how to use it before a situation arises.
The first thing you need to do to use a fire extinguisher is pull the pin. The metal pin is there to make sure that no unfortunate accidents happen to your extinguisher while it’s being stored.
After you pull the pin you should aim the hose low, toward the source of the flame. It’s easy to forget this in a panic and aim for the body of the flame. Take a moment just after you pull the pin to remember that you’re snuffing out the flame’s source.
Gently squeeze the lever. Keep a steady grip on the hose as well.
Sweep the base of the fire to ensure that you get all of it. Make sure to keep the extinguisher going until the fire is out.
