Replace your smoke detectors if they are more than 10 years old. Smoke detectors are generally more likely to fail after this point, so replacing them is a good idea if you want to keep your family safe in an emergency.
- If you don’t know how long your smoke detectors have been in place, switch them out. This often happens to new homeowners. If they don’t look very new, replace them.
- Swap out old smoke detectors if they don’t respond to tests. Aerosol sprays that simulate smoke can be purchased and used to trigger your smoke detectors for testing purposes. Follow instructions carefully when using aerosol testing sprays.
