- Get a transfer switch – A transfer switch costs extra, but it will connect a portable generator to your home’s circuit box to eliminate both the risk and hassle of using extension cords. The transfer switch will also protect your generator and appliances from potential damage when your grid power returns.
- Consider the fuel – Portable generators use between 8 and 22 gallons of gas a day, whereas stationary units contain around 250 gallons and can run between 8 and 15 days.
- Look at various features – Many portable generators will turn themselves off when the engine oil is low. Fuel shutoff features will let you run the engine dry in order to draw gas from the fuel system to prevent it from fouling parts.
