High Water Mark: Must-Have Things In Your Flood Preparation Kit

Topics:

When the rain falls, the waters will rise. Sometimes, the water rises just a little too much around Atlanta and Macon. To ensure you can get through a flood successfully, you’ll want to have some items on hand, ready to go at a moment’s notice. Here’s a list of items you’ll find handy in a flood.

Must-Have Things in Your Flood Preparation Kit

Clean Water and Nonperishable Food

You’ll want to store one gallon of water per family member per day, so a household of four would store 12 gallons. For food, you’ll want canned or dehydrated food that is kept dry and sealed in a pest-resistant container, such as a bucket with a gasket lid.

Communications and Light

To keep track of what’s happening and where you need to go for help, having a good radio with a hand crank is essential. Try to find one that provides light and charging ports for your electronics. You’ll also want to have a source of light, preferably a battery-powered lantern or flashlight.

Clothes, Blankets, Hygiene Items and First Aid Kit

Store a set of clean, dry clothes to change into, preferably with a spare pair or two of socks. A basic kit of hygiene items includes soap, toothpaste, toothbrush, toilet paper, hand sanitizer and feminine hygiene products if needed. Don’t forget a blanket or sleeping bag.

Cash and Copies of Important Documents

Put a copy of your ID, credit cards and important documents into your kit, along with some cash. Banks often remain closed and credit card networks fail during flooding.
