Georgia has many different variables due to weather, fires, floods etc… making disaster prevention key. One mode of prevention is to install GFCI outlets in your home.

GFCI (Ground-fault circuit interrupter) outlets consist of:

  • Two slots to plug an electrical device into, with a hole below them for the “ground”.
  • The left slot is slightly longer than the right one.
  • The longer side is the “neutral” side, the other is the “hot” side.
  • They come equipped with a “reset” and “test” button.

The current flowing from the “hot” to “neutral” side is monitored by the GFCI. If you are standing in water while blow drying your hair, you can become part of the circuit (“ground”) and electrical current can pass through you, as well as, the wires. When the GFCI registers this imbalance of power, it immediately “trips” the outlet and cuts the power to your device – preventing a fire/saving your life. This is why these outlets are installed anywhere there is a water supply.
