Seeing your home flooded can be quite a shock to your system. However, you should act fast after your home has been flooded in order to prevent more damage from occurring. The following are a few important first response tips to keep in mind if your home has been flooded:
- Look for loose power lines. If you see any power lines around your home that are down, then you’ll want to be extra careful – avoid stepping on puddles and standing water.
- Be careful about entering your home. Make sure that your porch roof and overhangs still have their supports. You don’t want to enter a home that is in danger of collapsing.
- If you smell gas inside your home, get out immediately and call the fire department.
- When cleaning up after a flood, be sure to wear protective clothing, such as rubber boots and rubber gloves.
- Throw away all food and water that have come into contact with floodwater, even canned goods, plastic utensils and water bottles.
These are just a few of the tips to keep in mind when dealing with a flooded home. Be sure to contact us at Parker Young for advice concerning homes with flood damage.
