Fire safety is an important part of your home plan, especially if you have a fireplace in your bedroom you use to stay warm. However, other items in your bedroom could be fire hazards and being aware of them is essential. Use these tips to make sure you stay safe in your bedroom and protect your home from fire damage.
Make sure you don’t block electrical cords with your bed, nightstand or other pieces of furniture. Heat can build up and start a fire.
- Inspect cords on all appliances but particularly on those that generate heat like electric blankets and space heaters, at least once per season. Frayed or damaged cords could start a fire very quickly.
- Keep bedding, furniture and other flammable items at least three feet away from a space heater, if you use one. Ideally, you’ll want to put the space heater in an area of its own on a hard surface that is not flammable. Avoid keeping your space heater on carpet if at all possible in case it falls.
- Install a working smoke alarm in your bedroom, even if you have one in your hallway now.
