Making sure that you’re prepared for a disaster is important, especially if you have a family. You’ll want to know exactly what to do and have everything you need if you have to flee at a moment’s notice. Just don’t forget about your pets when planning for a disaster! The following are a few tips to keep in mind if you are a pet owner:
Find out what places in your area provide shelter to pets. Emergency shelters often do not accept pets for health reasons. Find hotels or motels in the area that do allow pets in case you need to evacuate your home.
- If you need to leave your home, you’ll want to bring a number of things with you for your pet, including pet food, pet medication, can opener, food and water bowls, bottled water, a first-aid kit and the pet’s veterinary records.
- Keep a leash on your pet when evacuating so that it doesn’t run away if it is panicked.
- Double check the ID tags on your pet to make sure they are up to date and securely fastened.
