Home is usually the safest place a person can think of. Unfortunately, this can lull people into a false sense of security. Accidents can happen to anyone and, especially during the holidays and in the cold of winter, the increased use of fireplaces, candles, and decorative lights can cause a fire. This is why you need to have a fire escape plan with which your entire family is familiar. Follow these home safety tips in order to prepare your family in the case of a fire.
- Create a floor plan of your home and mark all emergency exits, showing at least two exits per room.
- Figure out beforehand if anyone in your family will need help evacuating, such as children or the elderly, and who will be responsible for getting them outside.
- Choose a safe spot outside where everyone will meet once they escape the home.
- Practice your escape routes with everyone in your family so that you know that all the exits you have marked are easy to use.
Do not assume that your family is safe from accidents, as a fire or other emergencies can happen to anyone. If there is a fire in your home, do not attempt to put it out yourself if it has grown too large. Focus on your family’s safety first and follow your fire escape plan.
You can always call on Parker Young Construction to repair your home once your family is safe and the fire is contained.
