5 Surprising Home Fire Hazards

As a homeowner, you do what you can to keep your family safe, and that likely includes making sure smoke alarms and fire detectors are installed and working. While those can warn you, they can’t keep you safe and stop a fire. That’s why knowing what fire hazards you should look for is important.

Here are 5 fire hazards that are commonly overlooked:

  • Clutter in your closet. It might not seem like much, but that pile of old clothes can be a fire hazard.
  • Laptops. A laptop that doesn’t have proper airflow can easily catch fire when placed on a flammable surface for too long – even something like a bed.
  • Stored matches. If left in a place exposed to too much heat, matches in a box can combust. Store them in a cool place.
  • Old appliances. These are more likely to start a fire because of faulty plugs — especially dryers and stoves.
  • Glass accessories. Exposed to the sunlight, these can heat up and cause concentrated heat on items like your sofa or rug, starting a fire quickly.
